Grand River Rocks, Kitchener
Grand River Rocks opened on Borden Avenue in 2011 and moved to 264 Victoria Street North in June 2024, so older listings may still show the old address. The Kitchener gym has top-rope and lead walls, about 32 auto-belays, some of them in a Kids Corner, two boulders and weights, plus yoga, aerial silks and pole, circus arts, youth teams and camps. Tuesday and Thursday mornings are for members only.
Grand River Rocks, Waterloo
The Waterloo gym on Lodge Street, which broke ground in October 2019, has about 12,500 sq ft of bouldering on Impact Climbing walls, a MoonBoard and campus boards, and runs Bouldering 101 and 201 courses. Its Boulder Night competitions set about 15 comp-style problems from V2 to V10, and the Brawl in the Fall is held every autumn. It rents crash pads, and first-timers get a free guest pass. A dual membership for both Grand River Rocks gyms cost $87 a month in October 2026.
The Core, Cambridge
The Core Climbing Gym on Jamieson Parkway has been a training-focused bouldering gym since 2017, and the owners of the Guelph Grotto bought it in 2023. Its problems are set in ungraded colour circuits, from Foundational to Performance, with competition circuits on the Whale and the comp wall, a MoonBoard and the Beach, which the gym calls one of Ontario's largest spray walls. Climbs can be logged and set in the Retro Flash app, and it runs a youth programme, an adult training team and a "Girls, Gays and Theys" night. A membership covering The Core and the Grotto cost $82 a month.
University of Waterloo
The university's wall at the Physical Activities Complex (PAC) has a 30 to 40-foot top-rope wall with five auto-belays and five manual belays, and a 20-foot bouldering wall. It's for the university community: UW sells athletics memberships only to students, alumni, faculty and staff, and other adults can come in only as a member's signed-in guest. Climbers need a Rock Climbing Membership or one-day use, sold at the PAC desk on the day, subject to availability: $12.50 plus HST in October 2026, or $15.50 with shoes. Climbers book time slots, and there are Learn to Belay sessions, women's sessions and sessions for trans, non-binary and 2SLGBTQ+ climbers. The University of Waterloo Climbing Club, $5 a term, meets weekly at the PAC and Grand River Rocks and runs outdoor trips.
Prices
In October 2026 an adult day pass cost $24 at both Grand River Rocks gyms and $24.50 at The Core, before tax. Grand River Rocks and Conquer Climbing Centre in Brantford give each other's members half-price day passes.
Climbing outdoors
Don't plan on climbing at Rockwood or the Elora Gorge. Both are on Grand River Conservation Authority land, and the Ontario Alliance of Climbers lists the rock at both as closed. In 2023 the authority reportedly hired a rope-access crew to remove all the fixed hardware at Rockwood, ending climbing on hard classics such as Deja Vu (5.14a). The status of ice climbing at Elora is unknown. The nearest open crags are Rattlesnake Point, about 47 km away, and Mount Nemo, about 50 km away, both run by Conservation Halton: see outdoor climbing near Toronto for their rules.
Competitions
The Core hosts the Ontario Climbing Federation's bouldering provincials for qualified under-17 to under-21 climbers on 6 and 7 March 2027. For the Guelph Grotto and the University of Guelph's wall, see climbing in Guelph, and for Gravity's big roped walls, climbing in Hamilton.
