Guelph Grotto
Dave Perozzo opened the Grotto on Victoria Road South in 1994. A Walltopia expansion in 2021 added 7,800 sq ft of floor space, and the gym now has about 10,000 sq ft of climbing: 45 lead routes, about 100 top-rope routes, nine auto-belays and large bouldering areas, reset every week, plus a MoonBoard and a Kilter Board. There's a coffee bar and a party room, adult technique courses, aerial silks and trapeze, and youth programmes and camps. Members can climb from 06:00 on weekday mornings, and a sensory-friendly session runs on Saturdays from 08:00 to 10:00. Membership includes free monthly passes to The Core and to Junction and J2 in London.
University of Guelph
The university's climbing wall, in the Gryphons Athletics Centre on Stone Road East (Larry Pearson entrance), has bouldering, top-rope climbing and auto-belays. In autumn and winter, U of G students and adults aged 18 and over with a recreation membership can buy a climbing day pass for $15 or a climbing membership for $70 a semester. A Level 1 orientation covers bouldering and the auto-belays, and Level 2 adds top-rope belaying. Groups can book the wall whether or not they're members: in October 2026 it cost $158 for up to 12 people. In autumn 2026 it was closed on Fridays for route setting and on Saturdays.
The Core, Cambridge
About 15 km away, The Core Climbing Gym has belonged to the Grotto's owners since 2023. It's a training-focused bouldering gym with ungraded colour circuits, a MoonBoard and a big spray wall, and it hosts the Ontario Climbing Federation's bouldering provincials for qualified under-17 to under-21 climbers on 6 and 7 March 2027. For Grand River Rocks and the University of Waterloo, see climbing in Kitchener-Waterloo.
Prices
In October 2026 an adult day pass cost $24.50 at the Grotto and at The Core, and a Grotto membership $72 a month by direct debit, or $66 for under-18s, students and over-55s. A year's prepaid membership, which includes The Core, cost $840. At the University of Guelph, eligible climbers paid $15 for a day pass, plus HST.
Climbing outdoors
Rockwood is the Guelph area's historic crag: the Alpine Club's Toronto Committee recorded outings there in 1922. Climbing is no longer allowed, though. The Grand River Conservation Authority reportedly had all the fixed hardware removed in 2023, and the Ontario Alliance of Climbers lists Rockwood and the rock at the Elora Gorge as closed. The nearest open crag is Rattlesnake Point near Milton, about 29 km away, where the Grotto runs Intro to Rock Climbing and top-rope anchor courses; in October 2026 the intro course cost $224 for non-members, plus park entry. The Grotto also runs caving trips at Metcalf Rock. See outdoor climbing near Toronto for the rules at the Halton crags.
