Tasmania's open bouldering titles are at Rock It Derwent Park in Hobart on Saturday 5 December 2026, with Open A, Open B for first-timers and Masters. Early-bird entry is $75 until 10 November, and round 2 of the youth series follows on the Sunday.
Sport Climbing Tasmania's open bouldering championship, the 2026 Tassie Open Boulder State Titles, is on Saturday 5 December 2026 at Rock It Derwent Park, the bouldering gym on Elmsleigh Road in Hobart's northern suburbs. The next day, Sunday 6 December, the same gym hosts round 2 of the Tassie Youth Boulder Series for under-13s, under-15s and under-17s. Entries for both close on 1 December. The details below come from the Sport Climbing Australia event page and Sport Climbing Tasmania's youth series information pack, as they stood on 23 October 2026.
Who can enter the State Titles
There are three categories, each with male and female divisions:
- Open A, for the most competitive climbers.
- Open B, for recreational climbers and first-timers: you don't need any competition experience.
- Masters.
Every competitor needs current Sport Climbing Australia (SCA) membership. SCA's 12-month State and National membership costs $40, and a 6-month Event Climbing Licence is $30. Under-19s who want to be considered for the Tasmanian youth team must enter Open A. For the Youth Boulder Series they are ranked only against other under-19s in Open A, and those placings give their round 2 series points.
The 2026 page doesn't mention interstate climbers, but recent Tasmanian titles have taken them: the 2024 lead titles welcomed interstate and international entrants, and the 2025 bouldering results list climbers from Victoria, Western Australia, the ACT and Queensland, with Tasmanians ranked separately for the state titles.
Entry fees and deadlines
- Early bird: $75, or $115 with the event T-shirt, until 10 November.
- Standard: $85, until 24 November.
- Late: $95, until 1 December, when all entries close.
- T-shirt only: $50, ordered by 10 November. Coaches register for $10.
SCA membership is paid on top of the entry fee.
What to expect on the day
The schedule is still marked "TBA" on the event page, and the format for 2026 hasn't been published. At the 2025 titles, held over two days at Beta Park in Launceston, Open A climbed a boulder-jam qualifier followed by semi-finals and finals, Masters had a boulder jam and a final, and Open B was a boulder jam alone. In a boulder jam, competitors get a set time to attempt a circuit of problems and are scored on the tops and zones they reach and the attempts they take.
The 2026 event also looks different from 2025's. That year the titles covered every youth category from under-11 to under-19 alongside Open, Masters and Inclusive. This year the open titles take a single day, and the younger categories compete in their own three-round youth series instead.
Youth Boulder Series round 2
On Sunday 6 December, round 2 of the 2026–27 Tassie Youth Boulder Series is a boulder jam for three age groups, each with male and female divisions:
- U13: born 2015 or 2016
- U15: born 2013 or 2014
- U17: born 2011 or 2012
Climbers get one 90-minute session on seven problems, with no finals. Registration and warm-up open at 7am, the first session starts at about 7.30am, and each category's session time is emailed beforehand; there's no choosing a different one. Entry is $15 a round plus SCA membership, and climbers who aren't current Rock It members also pay casual gym entry on the day. Under-19s don't climb on the Sunday: their round 2 points come from Open A the day before. Colourblind competitors are asked to tell Sport Climbing Tasmania at least a week ahead.
Round 1 is at Derwent Park on Saturday 31 October for under-15s, under-17s and under-19s, with entries closing on 26 October. Round 3, at Rock It Hobart on a date still to be announced, uses a 5-on/5-off format, and the combined results of rounds 1 and 2 decide who is invited. Results across the series are used to pick the Tasmanian team for the 2027 Youth Boulder Nationals, but the organisers stress that young climbers who simply want a go are welcome too.
How to register
- Join or renew SCA membership.
- Register on the right event page: the State Titles for Open A, Open B or Masters, or youth round 2, choosing the category by birth year.
- Pay the entry fee. Youth climbers who aren't Rock It members should also budget for gym entry on the day.
Questions go to Sport Climbing Tasmania at admin@sportclimbingtasmania.org.au, and the event pages will also call for volunteers to judge and brush holds.
The venue
Rock It Derwent Park, at 4-6 Elmsleigh Road, is the bouldering-only sister of Rock It's roped centre in central Hobart, about ten minutes' drive north of the city. It has a central island, a steep cave, a competition wall and a Kilter Board, with coffee and food on site, and a day pass costs $20 for adults. It hosted the state bouldering titles for the first time in 2024 before they moved to Launceston in 2025. For more on the island's walls and crags, see our guides to climbing in Tasmania and climbing in Australia.
