A climbing wall at a YMCA camp

YMCA Camp Warrawee, which now goes by The Y Camp Warrawee and trades as Y Camping, is a 228-bed residential camp run by YMCA Queensland on Byrnes Road North in Joyner, about 35 minutes north of Brisbane, beside the North Pine River. It hosts school, church, youth and corporate groups, and its staff lead more than 30 activities on land, on the water and at height.

Climbing at the camp

  • Indoor climbing wall: single-pitch top-rope climbing on a built wall, belayed from the ground by an Outdoor Leader and group staff or, from Grade 7, by participants as a team. Open from Grade 2 (age 7).
  • Bouldering: a low wall in the Bundalong Activity Centre, from age 8.
  • Abseiling: climb a 10m ladder to the top of the Bundalong Recreation Centre and abseil down, from Grade 7 (age 11).
  • Ropes activities: indoor high ropes, a vertical play pen, a giant swing, a possum glider, a crate climb, low ropes and the Bluegum Challenge, a climb up a gum tree.

Who can climb

The wall isn't open for casual visits: climbing is booked as part of a group camp or day programme, with helmets and harnesses provided. In the school holidays the camp has run $5 Mega Swing and Bouldering sessions for 10 to 17-year-olds through City of Moreton Bay's Healthy and Active Moreton programme, booked on the council's website.

Facilities

Groups stay in cabins and lodges spread through the bushland, and the camp also has a swimming pool, a dining hall, the Jack Harris sports hall and meeting rooms.

    $5 a session

    A council-subsidised holiday session at the camp's Bundalong Activity Centre: practise on the bouldering wall, then ride the mega swing. Under-12s need an adult with them throughout; wear enclosed shoes and knee-length shorts, and bring water and a snack.
