Sportrock opened this gym on Eisenhower Avenue in 1996, two years after its founders started the first commercial climbing gym in the DC area in Rockville. It sits in the West End Business Center, about 200 yards from Van Dorn Street Metro station on the Blue Line, with free parking outside.
The SRPI is a purpose-built 9,000 sq ft training hall inside the gym, with 8,500 sq ft of climbing on two World Cup-style bouldering walls of more than 100 ft each, a 20 ft spray wall and a campus board. Its boulders are set in four colour-coded skill circuits instead of grades, and it hosts the Sportrock Climbing League, competitions and coaching.
Classes run from first-timer introductions and belay lessons to lead and crack climbing, alongside youth programmes and teams. The calendar is full of meet-ups, including Girl Beta for women, Latine, LGBTQ+, veterans' and 55+ groups, and sensory-friendly sessions, and Up ENDing Parkinson's, a non-profit founded at Sportrock, runs guided sessions for people with Parkinson's disease several mornings a week.

“My favorite indoor rock climbing gym! I love the renovations they made. The 60-foot + walls are fantastic. Tons of bouldering…”
“…The gym is beautiful, and has routes for every level and everything that we need to stay active. Our kids love climbing here, and the staff is always kind and encouraging.”
