Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia
Canberra PCYC, a non-profit police and community youth club working in the city since 1957, runs its Erindale Centre above the Erindale shops on Grattan Court in Wanniassa, in Canberra's Tuggeranong district. Alongside boxing, wrestling, martial arts, dance and tots' tumbling, the centre has a rock wall 6 metres high and 12 metres long with 10 rope-climbing lines, set from very easy to hard.
The club describes the wall as usually quiet, with a small and welcoming group of regulars. Climbing runs on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 16:00 to 20:00 during school terms. Children from six can climb with an adult belaying them, adults climb in pairs, and a juniors' class runs from 16:00 to 17:30 on the same evenings.
You need to be a Canberra PCYC member to climb: membership costs $35 a year for individuals or $55 for families. Members then pay $17 a session, with a harness included, or buy a term pass. For details, the centre asks climbers to phone after 4pm.
