Climbing Walls in Dundee

Dundee has two climbing walls a short walk from the city centre. Avertical World has filled a converted church on Blinshall Street since 2003, with roped walls, auto-belays and bouldering, and Bloc10 Dundee in the Angus Works became the city's first bouldering-only gym in 2022. Across the Tay, the University of St Andrews' roped wall opens to the public in the evenings and at weekends.

Avertical World

Avertical World was set up in 2003 by Simon Jenkins and Ian Richardson, and it's still the city's only centre for roped climbing. It has top-rope and lead walls, auto-belays, an abseil platform and hundreds of boulder problems, with Moon, Lattice and Woody boards for training and an upstairs gallery for watching. Bouldering needs no booking; to rope climb you need experience, an experienced climber with you or its two-hour ropes course. Bring a 30-metre rope if you lead on your own.

Bloc10 Dundee

Bloc10 Dundee, near Tannadice Park, opened as Block10 in January 2022. It has 585 m² of 4.5-metre bouldering walls, a stand-alone competition wall, a 2019 MoonBoard and a strength and conditioning gym. You pay at the door and first-timers get a short induction. Weekdays between 10:00 and 16:00 are the quietest, on-street parking is restricted on match days, and well-behaved dogs are welcome off the mats. The same family opened Bloc10 Aberdeen in 2025, and memberships cover both.

St Andrews

The University of St Andrews' wall at Saints Sport has 17 top-rope and lead lines plus a lead roof, graded 3+ to 7C+. Non-members can climb in the public sessions on weekday evenings and weekends after an assessment check with the climbing wall officer.

Prices

In October 2026 an adult day pass cost £11 at Bloc10, £15 at Avertical World and £9.50 at St Andrews. For regular climbers, Avertical World's monthly membership was £36 without hire, and Bloc10's was £40 including shoe hire, or £30 off-peak.

Beginners and children

Bloc10 is the easy place to start: just turn up, and its kids' circuit has problems for children from about four, with Wild Climbers sessions for ages 3 to 6, weekend NICAS classes and a Monday-morning parent and toddler session. Avertical World runs adult tasters, ropes and lead courses, and Dundee Dynos, its youth programme for ages seven and up, works through NICAS levels 1 to 5. Under-16s must be supervised by an adult at both.

Climbing outdoors near Dundee

About an hour's drive west, the schist crags of Craig a Barns above Dunkeld are among the most popular in Highland Perthshire; Polney Crag is five minutes uphill from parking on the old A9, with one- and two-pitch routes across the grades, though the trees keep it slow to dry. In Angus, Red Craig in Glen Clova has a couple of hundred climbs in the SMC's Cairngorms guide, with classic multi-pitch lines such as Central Crack.

Further afield
