Maitland, New South Wales, Australia
Pulse Climbing Maitland is a bouldering gym on the New England Highway in Rutherford, Maitland, in the Hunter Valley. It opened in November 2021 as the fourth Pulse Climbing gym, after Adamstown, Warners Bay and West Gosford, and Pulse calls it the Hunter Valley's first dedicated indoor bouldering gym. A membership covers all four gyms.
About 525 square metres of climbing wall holds more than 100 problems, graded with numbers on coloured holds, from very easy climbs for beginners and children to hard ones. The walls are split into areas such as the Roof, the Steep, the Vert, the Corridor, the Cave and the Nook, and the setters reset one area at a time. There is a project wall and a boulder of the week, and for training a MoonBoard, a scatter board and an area with gym equipment.
Climbers must be at least 5, and children under 12 need an adult supervising them. Every new climber gets a safety induction, and no booking is needed except for groups of 10 or more.
There is barista-made coffee and snacks, a kids' bouldering fort with a slide, a party room, a shower and a gear shop, and shoes and chalk can be hired. Students pay less on Mondays, and a Friday evening happy hour includes gear hire in the entry price.
