Tacoma's original climbing gym

Edgeworks Tacoma, on North 9th Street near Highway 16 and about 3 miles from downtown, is where Edgeworks Climbing + Fitness began in 2004 as Tacoma's first indoor climbing gym. A year-long expansion finished in 2018 added 45 ft walls and took it to around 17,000 sq ft of climbing. Membership covers all four Edgeworks gyms: Tacoma, Seattle, Bellevue and Bel-Red Boulders.

Walls and facilities

  • Roped climbing on top-rope and lead walls up to 45 ft, with a lead prow, cracks and varied terrain.
  • Bouldering, including a boulder you can top out.
  • Training: an adjustable Kilter Board, a campus board and a hangboard station.
  • Fitness: weight and cardio rooms, an upstairs yoga studio, yoga and strength classes and personal training.
  • Locker rooms with showers, an upstairs viewing area and lounge with Wi-Fi, and a pro shop.

Courses and community

The climbing school runs everything from introductions to roped climbing and bouldering to lead, lead-fall, anchors, rappelling and rescue courses, with private lessons and Edgeworks' guided outdoor programmes. Youth programmes, Team Edgeworks, camps and a scouts course cater for younger climbers. Community nights include a fortnightly women's night, monthly queer, BIPOC, Spanish-speaking and adaptive nights, and weekly sessions for people living with Parkinson's. Every October the gym hosts Blacklight Bouldering, a costume comp on a glow-in-the-dark set, which reached its 22nd year in 2026.

- Military Night (1st Saturday), College Night (2nd Saturday) and Family Night (4th Saturday), 17:00 - 22:00: 50% off day passes with free gear rental

- Non-profit groups: 20% off

- Sales tax is added to passes bought online

- Monthly auto-pay with no fixed term; start-up fee $50 (family $90, student $40, military $25)

- Student or youth: $76 a month

- Family (adult plus youth): $158 a month

- Weekly membership: $35 a week plus a $25 start-up fee, 2-week minimum

- Includes all four Edgeworks gyms, yoga, intro classes, member clinics and guest passes

- Prices are for ACH or debit billing; credit cards add 3%; sales tax is added at billing; freezes $10 a month

    Blacklight Bouldering

    $70

    The 22nd edition of Edgeworks Tacoma's Halloween bouldering comp, this year themed as a haunted house: a new set lit with glowing tape art, ten climbs per category, costumes and raffle prizes. Afternoon session (14:00-17:00) for youth and adults, evening session (18:00-21:00) for adults; no USA Climbing membership needed.

    Free for members, half-price day pass for guests, rental included

    Fortnightly climbing night for women and underserved genders: find belay partners, meet other climbers and build community. A belay certification is encouraged.

    Monthly session for adaptive climbers of all ages and abilities, with staff belayers and adaptive equipment provided. No experience needed; book ahead as places are limited.
