Liège, Belgium
The Blanc Gravier sports complex is on the University of Liège's Sart-Tilman campus, opposite the CHU hospital. Its main building, B21, holds the university's physical education institute and a sports centre run by ADEPS, the sports administration of the Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles. Alongside sports halls, gymnasiums and a swimming pool, it has an indoor climbing wall, and there's an outdoor climbing wall among the athletics track, pitches and tennis courts outside.
There's no published drop-in climbing. The way in is ULiège Sports' climbing section, which takes ULiège students and staff, students from other schools, alumni and outside members from the age of 16. New members start with three compulsory induction sessions on the indoor wall on Wednesday evenings in October and November, learning technique and safety, with ropes, harnesses and belay devices provided; flat-soled trainers will do instead of climbing shoes. Places are limited, and there are no sessions in the school holidays or on public holidays.
After the induction, the section climbs on Monday evenings at the Area hall in Herstal and, from October to March, on Friday evenings at Top Rock in Liège, and members need their own equipment. It also runs crag outings around Liège in spring and autumn, bouldering trips to Fontainebleau at All Saints' and Easter, and rock-climbing courses in early summer. Members get preferential rates on monthly and quarterly passes at Top Rock and L'Éléphant.
