Boulderzaal The Island is a large bouldering hall on Natiestraat in the north of Antwerp, and calls itself one of the newest and largest in Belgium. It covers about 2,000 m², with some 200 boulders graded from 2 to 8A+ and around 40 new problems set every week. The walls are no higher than 4.5 metres above thick matting, so there are no ropes or belaying, and climbs can be logged in the TopLogger app.
No experience is needed: first-timers get a short introduction and tour at the desk, and climbing shoes can be hired. Climbers must be at least 8, and under-12s climb only under the direct supervision of a parent, with one adult for every two children. Showers, changing rooms, toilets, water, wifi and a training area come at no extra cost, and there is a bar for a drink after a session.
Subscriptions also give entry to the hall's partner bouldering gyms in the Netherlands, including its sister halls Block013 and Silk.
