Onyx Climbing is an independent bouldering centre on Hill Street in Blackburn, opened by Lancashire climbers Gill Peet, a former GB team climber and junior coach, and Ian Vickers, a former international route setter. Its two bouldering rooms run from slabs to steep overhangs, and the problems are set in a traditional style meant to feel like outdoor climbing, with new climbs every week and over 150 problems graded individually from V0 to V8+.
There is no registration or joining fee. Experienced climbers aged 18 and over register online before their first visit, and parents can supervise children after a 30-minute supervisor induction. Onyx runs one-to-one and group coaching, a weekly Essentials beginner workshop, a monthly social night, the Equaliser bouldering series, a youth programme for ages 7 and up and a home education club. It is a card-only business.
