Leknes, Nordland, Norway
Vest-Lofoten Klatreklubb was founded in May 2012 to build a climbing wall in Lofothallen, the indoor sports hall at Leknes. The wall opened in summer 2014 and the club's volunteers have extended it gradually since. Today the club has more than 300 active members, and running the wall is its main activity.
Everyone who climbs must pay and either hold a Brattkort or climb with someone who has one; a top-rope card (topptaukort) lets you belay on top-rope only. The club's NKF-approved instructors run belay courses every half-year (NOK 1,500 for nine hours, including equipment, practice and the Brattkort test, from age 13), plus occasional indoor-to-outdoor and technique courses.
The wall opens on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and on Sunday afternoons from October to March or April. It closes in the school holidays, can occasionally close when the sun is out, and the club posts changes in its Facebook group. Under-18s need a guardian's permission. The club also runs a youth group on Wednesdays, children's climbing with a parent belaying on Tuesdays, and a PolarCup or another low-key competition every year.
As we last found them. Prices change, so check the wall's website before you go.
