Varhaug IL's climbing group has a climbing room at the inner end of Varhaughallen, the sports hall at Opstadvegen 583 in Varhaug, Hå. It has two walls: the larger one, where climbers use ropes to go high, and a smaller bouldering wall climbed without a rope, which is new and has made room for more climbers. The group caters for children from 3rd grade, young people and adults, and no previous experience is needed.
On Tuesday and Wednesday evenings the climbing room is open to anyone who wants to try. Climbing is free for club members and costs NOK 70 for others, harnesses and shoes can be hired (NOK 40 each for over-18s), and children under 13 must bring an adult. The rest of the week the room is used by the club's training groups, organised by year of birth. Because of high demand, children and young people sign up for those by emailing the climbing group, which replies if there's a place. The group's activity follows the school terms.
The club runs courses for the Brattkort and the top-rope card (topptaukort) for climbers aged 13 and over, either during the adult sessions or as separate courses. A course costs NOK 400 for members and NOK 1,000 for others, and it's free for anyone training to become a coach.
As we last found them. Prices change, so check the wall's website before you go.
