About

Bouldering in Margaret River

The Hangout is an indoor bouldering gym and family activity centre on Station Road in Margaret River, in Western Australia's South West. Its large open-plan bouldering area has problems for complete beginners through to strong climbers, and the setters put up new problems every week. Climbers aged 6 and over can boulder after a short "fall safely" induction, and children under 14 must be supervised by an adult unless they're in a class.

A training area has a MoonBoard and a circuit board, and a small gym has dumbbells, kettlebells, a bar and plates, a squat rack, a treadmill, a bike and a rowing machine. The café serves barista coffee, smoothies, toasted sandwiches and snacks, with a view of the climbing.

Play zone and quieter times

A separate soft-play and ninja zone with a warped wall and a ball pit is for children aged 2 to 10, open on weekdays until 15:00 and weekend mornings. The centre says it is usually calmer, with fewer young children about, after 1pm. It describes itself as neurodivergent-affirming and arranges sessions for individuals and small groups.

Lessons and groups

  • After-school bouldering lessons in eight-week terms, grouped by age and level from beginner to expert
  • A mixed-level class for teenagers aged 13 and over
  • KidSport vouchers accepted for lessons
  • Work functions, team building and larger groups by arrangement
