About

Bouldering in a former Morpeth cinema

The Coliseum opened in 2025 in Morpeth's 100-year-old former cinema on New Market, and bills itself as Northumberland's first full bouldering centre. Climbs are graded 1 to 8 with numbered tags rather than by hold colour, and new problems go up every Monday.

The walls

  • Hadrian's Slab, the Spartacus central boulder and Maximus, a competition-style wall
  • The Crypt, a cave
  • A Kilter Board and The Pit, a training zone with free weights
  • A Roman-themed children's climbing room for under-8s

Visiting

No booking is needed for general climbing: first-time visitors register online, watch the safety video and take a free induction on arrival. Children aged 8 to 17 can use the main gym with active adult supervision (one adult to two under-18s), and teenagers can earn a licence to climb independently.

Facilities and sessions

The Summit Bar serves coffee and snacks, and there are lockers, showers, accessible toilets, shoe hire and a shop. Upstairs rooms are hired out for physio, massage, yoga and meetings. The timetable includes Bouldering Essentials courses for beginners, junior clubs and NICAS, 1-to-1 coaching and weekly socials for women, over-55s, new climbers and parents, plus themed socials every Wednesday evening and a monthly quiz.
