About

Climbing at Summit Up

Summit Up is a family climbing centre in Oldham town centre, opened in 2021 and run by a trading subsidiary of the Stoller Charitable Trust. It offers all three Olympic disciplines: 50 roped lines with more than 100 routes on walls up to 15 metres, covering top rope, lead and auto belays, an official timed speed wall, and a two-level bouldering area with a floating boulder and a range of wall angles. Routes and problems are reset weekly.

Getting started

  • Experienced climbers take a free skills assessment and sign an online waiver before their first visit.
  • Taster, bouldering beginners, roped beginners and learn-to-lead courses, plus improvers and advanced coaching.
  • Summiteers clubs for children, SEND sessions, and adult and women's socials on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
  • Mountain Training courses for climbing qualifications.

Facilities

The building also holds one of the largest Clip 'n Climb arenas in the north of England, three levels of soft play and the South Ridge Café, which overlooks the walls. There are changing rooms with showers, lockers, a shop, equipment hire, party and meeting rooms, a lift to all floors and covered bike racks. There is no car park of its own, but council car parks are a few minutes' walk away and Oldham Mumps and Oldham Central Metrolink stops are about ten minutes away. Fantastic climbing centre for everyone.

I've climbed at many different gyms but Summit Up really stood out to me. Great mixture of bouldering, top rope, auto belays and lead walls. Add onto that a friendly atmosphere, knowledgeable staff, delicious coffee and you have any climbers dream wall. The staff is really what has me coming back, they are professional, extremely friendly and hard working.
