A community-centre wall in Ignacio

The climbing wall at the SunUte Community Center belongs to the Southern Ute Indian Tribe's recreation centre in Ignacio, which has served tribal members and the surrounding communities since 2001. The 25 ft wall stands on the west side of the gymnasium, on the building's lower level.

Climbing

• Routes: five roped routes of varying difficulty, plus bouldering.
• Gear: the wall has its own ropes and belay equipment, and harnesses, helmets and shoes are available to borrow.
• Learning: staff teach basic belaying techniques, so it suits first-timers.
• When to climb: the wall is staffed for Climbing Club and on some days as one of the centre's lunchtime activities. Call the front desk on (970) 563-0214 to arrange a session.

Passes and the rest of the centre

Anyone can visit on a $6 day pass (ages 5 to 54), with lower rates for seniors and military, ten-visit punch passes and memberships from $65 a month. The centre also has a 5,000 sq ft fitness centre with cardio machines, selectorised equipment and free weights, LesMills and Zumba group exercise classes, a 25-yard pool with a hot tub and sauna, two basketball and volleyball courts, an archery range, meeting rooms and men's, women's and family locker rooms.
