Namur, Belgium
Roc Evasion is a rope-climbing hall on the Rue d'Enhaive in Jambes, Namur, just behind the swimming pool. It has about 1,100 m² of climbing on walls up to 16 metres high, including a 20-metre overhanging section, with 60 ropes and more than 170 routes from grade 3 to 8 that are reset regularly. A central pillar gives the hall an unusually large number of lines, and the routes cover slabs, overhangs, roofs, corners and arêtes. Lead climbing is allowed.
Boulderers have a cave with steep overhangs and roof problems, and there's a beginners' zone set up for children and school groups. The floor is covered with a shock-absorbing safety mat. The bar serves drinks and a wide choice of specialty beers, with a beer of the month.
There's no need to book: just turn up during opening hours. Climbers must look after their own safety on the rope, so if you don't know how to use the equipment, staff give a free 10 to 15-minute safety briefing, with no booking needed. Groups of more than four beginners should phone ahead. Harnesses, shoes and Grigris can be hired at reception, and you need your own personal insurance. Only liquid chalk or chalk balls are allowed.
The École d'escalade de Jambes, a Club Alpin Belge club, is based here. It runs courses for children from age 6 and for adults, holiday camps, outdoor trips to the crags, school sessions and birthday parties. Opening hours change in the school holidays and in July and August.
