Steyr, Upper Austria, Austria
Naturfreunde Kletterhalle Steyr is run by a company of the Naturfreunde's Steyr group. Its 1,150 m² of walls include 900 m² of top-rope and lead routes from 11.5 to 13 metres, with two auto-belays for climbing without a partner, and 250 m² of bouldering up to 4.5 metres. A course area has walls at four different angles, there's a separate bouldering area for therapy, and an upstairs training room has a 32 m² system wall at 30 degrees, a campus board, rings, a sling trainer and a weight bench. The hall hosts competitions such as the Upper Austrian youth bouldering championships.
Register digitally on your first visit. Only people with enough training and experience to climb or boulder safely, or who bring someone qualified to instruct them, may use the hall. Under-14s must be with an adult; from 14 you may climb alone with a parent's signature on the registration form. Overhanging sections can't be top-roped, and helmets are recommended. Holders of 10-visit, six-month and annual cards, and anyone with an online day ticket, can come in from 05:00 every day until closing time. Lockers are free, and harnesses, shoes, ropes and belay devices can be hired.
The Naturfreunde run a two-module course for adults (top-rope and belaying, then lead climbing and fall training), bouldering courses, children's courses from age five, parent-and-child climbing, supervised sessions for young people, taster sessions, and events for companies, clubs and birthdays. Course participants must be Naturfreunde members.
