Stekene, East Flanders, Belgium
Klimzaal Stekene is a climbing hall in Stekene's sports zone, run as a partnership between the municipality, the climbing and mountaineering club Vlaamse Bergsport Waasland (VBW) and the Flemish climbing federation (KBF). It has two rooms. The 11-metre lead hall has about 225 m² of climbable wall, with 15 ropes and around 40 routes from 3 to 7a above a special safety floor. Upstairs, the bouldering room has about 156 m² of climbing surface over thick crash mats, with around 40 problems from 3 to 7c. The club's volunteer route setters put up new climbs in both rooms every month.
Anyone who holds a KBF climbing certificate (KVB1, the top-rope certificate, or higher) can climb on their own, paying per visit or with a ten-visit card, and KBF and VBW members pay less. If you don't have a certificate yet, VBW's climbing school runs evening courses in the hall from age 16: KVB1 for top-roping and KVB2 for indoor lead climbing, each three lessons and an exam. The club also runs youth climbing groups for children from eight, and groups and schools can arrange an introduction through the municipality's sport service.
The hall opens at 08:45 every day. On Tuesday evenings it is reserved for the club from 18:00, and at weekends it closes at lunchtime unless another activity in the hall runs on later. It closes every July for maintenance. Harnesses and belay devices can be hired at the hall.
