About

The climbing hall at De Mixx

Klimzaal De Mixx is the climbing hall in De Mixx, Herselt's municipal sports and leisure centre. The mountain-sports club Natuurvrienden Bergstijgers Kempen built the wall in 2012 and 2013 and sets the rules for climbing there. It has 23 ropes and around 70 routes up to 11.5 metres for top-rope and lead climbing, and a small bouldering area on the thick mat under the overhang. The club also teaches multi-pitch rock-climbing techniques here, sets up caving rope techniques about once a year, and has two caving boxes.

Climbing there

Members of Bergstijgers Kempen with the club's mountain-sports insurance climb as part of their membership, and non-members can climb too, paying the hall attendant before they start. To climb on your own you need a KVB1 certificate, the Flemish top-rope belaying qualification, and your own gear, as there is no supervision. On Thursday evenings from 19:30 there is a supervised session where members without a KVB1 can climb, with harnesses and belay devices lent by the club. The club runs KVB1 courses (two evenings and a test) three or four times a year for anyone from 16, as well as courses for more experienced climbers.

The hall is open during De Mixx's opening hours, but it isn't always free to use. In term time it is kept for the club's G-climbing group, for young people with a physical or mental disability, on Wednesday afternoons from 14:00 to 16:00, and it is also booked for courses, which the club's agenda shows. Families are welcome: a parent with a KVB1 belays the children, and parents without one can bring them on Thursday evenings.
