Aalst, East Flanders, Belgium
Klimzaal Banzai is a climbing hall for both roped climbing and bouldering on the Pierre Corneliskaai, five minutes' walk from Aalst station. It has around 684 m² of bouldering walls up to 4.5 metres high above thick mats and 377 m² of rope walls, with new boulders set every week. Auto-belays let you try roped climbing without a partner, and Banzai Kiddies is a play zone for young children with climbing walls, a slide and climbing nets.
On your first visit staff explain how everything works, and for the auto-belays they show you how to put on a harness, clip in and do a partner check, so neither bouldering nor the auto-belays need a certificate. To climb on the rope walls, both climber and belayer need the KBF's Klimvaardigheidsbewijs 1 (Indoor Toprope) or an equivalent, and lead climbing needs KVB 2. The hall teaches KVB 1 over two three-hour evenings and also runs an eight-week Start to Climb course, training series and workshops. The youth climbing club and climbing camps are run by Vertical Thinking, the club based at the hall, which also runs rock-climbing courses.
