Haag, Lower Austria, Austria
Kletterturm Haag is an outdoor climbing tower in the town's sports and leisure centre, beside the Parkbad outdoor pool. Built by the town of Haag, it stands 17 metres high and has about 520 m² of climbing, including an 80 m² bouldering area, with more than 100 routes from grade 3 to 10+. Volunteers from the Alpenverein run it, it's certified by TÜV every year, and floodlights let you climb until late in the evening.
Buy a day, annual or family ticket in advance from the town's online shop, and fill in the Alpenverein registration form before your first climb (it's on the website and at the tower). Tickets are checked at random, and the tower is under video surveillance. You don't need to be an Alpenverein member to climb, though the volunteers recommend membership for the insurance it includes, and it's required for their courses.
Climbing is roped only, apart from the bouldering area up to the red line, and your rope must be at least 40 metres long. Under-18s need written permission from a parent to climb on their own, and under-14s must be supervised by a parent or guardian.
The Alpenverein runs summer courses at the tower, including two-evening beginners' courses for adults that teach you to top-rope on your own, and beginners' courses for children aged 8 to 11 and young people aged 12 to 15. Courses are cancelled in bad weather.
