Tannheim, Tyrol, Austria
The Kletter- und Bouldertreff opened in the summer of 2016 on the converted upper floor of the tourist information office in Tannheim, and is run by the Tannheimer Tal tourist board. It has about 250 m² of climbing surface and 1,800 holds: six rope lines with 18 routes up to 7.5 metres, graded UIAA 3 to 7+, which can be led or top-roped, and an auto-belay. The 170 m² bouldering area, up to 4.3 metres high, has 40 problems graded 3 to 9+, a top-out block and 30 cm of soft matting, and for training there's a campus board, hanging balls and rings.
The till is staffed from 13:00 to 18:00 (from 11:00 on holiday dates), and tickets are only sold then; once you have one, you can climb until 22:00. Holders of half-year, annual and ten-visit cards can come in from 11:00, or from 09:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Shoes and harnesses can be hired, and only liquid chalk is allowed. You can't reserve, so on rainy days it's worth phoning the till first to check there's space.
The hall isn't supervised and you climb at your own risk, so bring a belay device you know how to use. Under-18s need written permission from a parent to climb on their own, and under-14s must be supervised by one. Tanni's Kinderparadies, the tourist board's indoor play area for children, can be combined with climbing on one ticket.
As we last found them. Prices change, so check the wall's website before you go.
