Grip It Nelson is the second gym of Saskatoon's Grip It Climbing, which has run its larger roped gym in Caswell Hill since 2011. Nelson opened on 17 September 2023 on Nelson Road in University Heights, and Grip It calls it Saskatoon's first bouldering-focused climbing gym.
It has about 125 linear feet of bouldering terrain, five auto-belay walls of up to about 25 ft for climbing without a partner, and a Kilter Board. There is also a weight training space, showers and espresso. Routes change every week.
New climbers sign a waiver and get an orientation covering gear, a tour of the gym and how to use the auto-belays and bouldering area, and the free 45-minute Climbing 101 class can be booked here. Shoes, harnesses, chalk and GriGris can be hired. Children under about 30 lb are too light for the auto-belays, and children aged 7 and under must be supervised one-to-one by a guardian. Every pass and membership is also valid at Grip It Caswell, which has Grip It's top-rope and lead walls.
Nelson runs youth recreational groups, including Teen Train for ages 13 to 18, along with summer camps, school trips and group bookings for 8 to 16 people. It also hosts HOLD UP, a competition series that builds to a grand finale in June.

“Nice new facility with lots of climbing options. Boulders, Autobelay, kilter board, big training space. Espresso is a great bonus as well.”

“Grades seem accurate; movements within each boulder are also consistently at the appropriate grade level. My kids spend hours here and ask to come back almost every day.”
