About

Bouldering in Myrtleford

Buffalo Boulders is an independent bouldering gym at 190 Myrtle Street in Myrtleford, in north-east Victoria's alpine region. It opened in early 2023 to give the area an indoor activity, and is now run by new owners who want it to be a hub for the local climbing community. It sits on the Great Alpine Road and the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, an easy stop on the way to Bright, Falls Creek or Mt Hotham, with free parking out front and bike storage with locks and a pump.

The climbing

Climbing is ropeless, over padded matting. The wall sections are named after famous climbing areas, from The Diamond and El Cap to Taipan Wall, Céüse, Flatanger, Rocklands and Fontainebleau, and there is a MoonBoard for training. The setters reset a section every fortnight. Climbers aged five and over are welcome and walk-ins don't need to book: first-timers sign an online waiver and get a safety induction, and climbing shoes can be hired.

Facilities and programmes

  • A strength and warm-up area with a squat rack, bench, dumbbells, kettlebells, pull-up bars and hangboards
  • Barista coffee served until closing time, with cold drinks and local snacks
  • A gear shop selling chalk, brushes, crack gloves and skin care, and a drop-off point for shoe resoling
  • A Youth Squad for ages 6 to 17 in school terms, monthly women's coaching nights, birthday parties and group bookings

The gym is on one level, with double-door access and two toilets.
