Manchester, England, United Kingdom
BlocHaus Climbing is a family-run, independent bouldering centre in Openshaw, just outside Manchester city centre. It opened after the pandemic and was designed by climbers, with a wide range of wall angles from beginner-friendly slabs and vertical walls to steep overhangs. Problems are reset weekly by in-house and freelance setters, and easier climbs are spread across the whole gym rather than kept in one corner.
Weekly sessions include a Tuesday women's social, a Thursday community night led by different members each week, a coaching social and a teen social, plus kids' sessions, a youth climbing club and the Bloc Squad. BlocHaus also runs the free Bloc On bouldering league, Double Trouble (billed as the UK's only doubles bouldering competition) and its Haus Party birthday comp.
There is an open-plan café overlooking the walls, a shop, changing rooms with showers and lockers, and shoe and chalk bag hire. Access is step-free, parking is free and secure, and the centre is dog- and cycle-friendly. Off-peak entry before 2pm on weekdays is cheaper, and memberships have no joining or cancellation fees.
My favourite bouldering wall in the local area
I love this place! I think it offers the best value for money in the area, the staff are incredible and the atmosphere is supportive, especially for beginners. The routes are varied enough for a good experience across skill levels and change frequently to allow you to revisit often and still achieve something new. The space is large and well designed, ensuring that you have enough space to make your ascent safely, it never feels like you are crowding others, even at peak times.
