Beta Bloc opened in December 2016 on boulevard Hymus in Dorval and describes itself as the first and only climbing gym on Montréal's West Island. Its 14,000 sq ft space combines bouldering on 15-foot walls with a training area that has stationary bikes, a training rig, weights and a Kilter Board with an adjustable angle.
Instead of V-grades, problems are set in circuits: an Intro circuit for beginners, then circuits 1 to 6, each mixing styles and wall angles so that climbers progress gradually alongside others at their level. The walls are reset continually.
The bistro-bar serves espresso coffee, smoothies, snacks and dishes such as paninis, plus more than 40 local beers, some on draught. There's also a pro shop selling chalk, accessories and clothing, and changing rooms with showers.
Bouldering is recommended from age 8. Each child aged 9 or under needs their own supervising adult, who can't climb while watching a child of 6 or under; one adult can supervise two children aged 10 to 12. Under-18s need a parent or guardian to sign the risk form, and the gym doesn't host children's parties.
As we last found them. Prices change, so check the wall's website before you go.

“Great place for climbing, working out, and lounging in the cafe. Gem away from the downtown hustle and close to microbrewery and the west Island villages.”
“…They also reset three walls a week so there’s always something new to try… The only thing I wish they had was more hangboards, they have a couple but it can get a little crowded…”
“…They sell food, drinks, merch, and climbing equipment. Their grading scale works well and their sets have many different styles. I liked their top out area which is easy to get down from…”
