Mühlbachl, Tyrol, Austria
Basecamp Matrei is a climbing and bouldering hall at Statz, in Mühlbachl next to Matrei am Brenner, in the Wipptal south of Innsbruck. It has a 16-metre climbing tower, about 200 m² of bouldering and 250 m² of outdoor climbing walls. The same building houses a small climbing shop, a self-service bistro and café, the Injoy Wipptal fitness studio and a sauna area.
Courses range from taster sessions and basic and technique courses to private lessons, climbing and bouldering courses for children from the age of six, and a day that takes indoor climbers out to a crag.
Day tickets are only sold while the desk is staffed, and you can keep climbing after it closes; holders of a chip card can climb from 08:00 to 22:00 every day. In summer 2026 the desk opened at 16:00 daily, and the Wipptal tourist board currently lists weekday hours of 16:00 to 20:30, so check before a weekend visit. On your first visit you fill in a registration form confirming that you know your knots and how to use a belay device. Under-14s may not climb on their own, and 14- to 18-year-olds need a form signed by a parent. Members of the Alpenverein and the mountain rescue pay less for multi-visit and season cards, and members of the Alpenverein Matrei less again.
