Ötztal-Bahnhof, Tyrol, Austria
AREA 47, the outdoor adventure park at the entrance to the Ötztal, has its climbing wall on a pillar of the bridge over the Ötztaler Ache. At 27 metres it's billed as the highest artificial climbing wall in Austria, with about 40 lead routes from 3c to 8a on some 550 m² of wall, above the river and with the mountains all around. An auto-belay lets you climb without a partner, and beside the tower there's about 120 m² of outdoor bouldering with some 35 problems.
There's no guide or instructor on the wall, so you may only climb here if you can lead climb and belay safely. Bring your own kit, including a rope of at least 60 metres, or hire a harness, shoes, a rope and an assisted-braking belay device. Tickets are sold on site at the Water AREA till, and you can climb for as long as you like between 09:00 and 21:00. The wall stays open in most weather but closes in storms and other dangerous conditions.
AREA 47 is a summer park: in 2026 the Water AREA, where climbing tickets are sold, was open from 1 May to 27 September, and the park's winter break runs from 12 October 2026 to 1 May 2027.
As we last found them. Prices change, so check the wall's website before you go.
